The sun's been dropping below the ridge earlier and earlier these afternoons, and I can't stop noticing what it does to the light. I live on the north side of a forested hill, and this time of year the sun drops below that ridge early in the afternoon, casting everything in shadows and soft edges. That particular quality of light - angled and almost breathless - keeps showing up in the paintings I'm making right now.

The Wild Truth About Seasonal Art
This isn’t the main message you get from a lot of mainstream art advice: you have to create what's NOW, not what's "right" for the season. These paintings now are somber and quiet—not exactly what people expect during a festive season. But they have a soft, insistent light at their core, because that's what's true for me right now. The winter forest doesn't apologize for being drowsy and dormant. The slanting light doesn't try to be cheerful. They just are what they are. Your creative work gets to do the same.
YouTube Process Video: Tissue Paper Texture on Canvas
I’ve been moving forward with these winter forest paintings and posted a new process video showing how I add tissue paper texture to canvas, featuring one of these quiet winter pieces in progress. It’s my usual video process - live, unedited, just me showing you what I’m making and talking through the process. It's been surprisingly popular (thank you for watching!). You can see it here: https://youtu.be/gmtI5evoP-Y
